Confidentiality
the duty owed by health care providers to protect the privacy of patient information
Defamation
the making of a false statement to a third party that is harmful to another’s reputation. Defamatory statements may concern patients, family members, visitors, other employees, or physicians
Duty to warn third parties
the obligation to disclose information to third parties to warn them of a risk such as violence or contagious disease
HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability & Accountability)
enacted by the federal government to enhance the rights of consumers regarding their access to their records, limit access of others to those records, and improve quality, efficiency, and effectiveness of health care delivery through a national framework
Lie
a falsehood to another who has a reasonable expectation of the truth
Place of communication
the environment of the expectation of truth
Role of communication
the relationship between the communicators, which may have an impact on the expectation of truth
Secret
knowledge a person has a right or obligation to conceal
Statutory duty to report
legal obligation to report or variety of medical conditions and incidents, including venereal disease, contagious diseases such as tuberculosis, wounds inflicted by violence, poisonings, industrial accidents, abortions, drug abuse, and abuse of children, elderly people, and people with disabilities
Truthfulness
conformity with fact or reality
Veracity
the obligation to tell the truth and not to lie or deceive others
