Chapter 5 Key Terms Flashcards
Organisms
Living individuals with 1+ cell
Cells
Basic unit of life, use DNA to produce proteins
Cell theory
Cells are fundamental unit of life, all organisms are cells, all cells come from preexisting cells, modern cells evolved from common ancestor.
Implications of Cell Theory
Functions of all cells are similar, life is continuous, origin of life was origin of cells
Lipids
Non-polar, hydrocarbons, insoluble in water, held together by van der waals holds them together, not polymers because not covalently bonded.
Saturated Fatty acids
No double bonds, molecules pack tightly, solid at room temp. Ex: Butter
Unsaturated Fatty acids
1 or more double bonds in carbon chain, kinks prevent close packing. Ex: oil
Triglycerides
3 fatty acids + glycerol
Ester linkage
Carbonyls bond with Hydroxls of glycerol
Phospholipids
Fatty acid + glycerol but, phosphate group replaces one fatty acid
Amphipathic
2 opposing properties in one molecule
