chapter 5 Jasimen licht Flashcards
What is chemical structure
The arrangement of the atoms in a substance
What is chemical bond
The attractive force that holds atoms or ions together
What is bond length
The distance between two bonded atoms at their minimum potential energy
What is bond angle
The angle formed by two bonds to the same atom
What is hydrogen bond
The intermolecular force occurring when a hydrogen atom that is bonded to a highly electronegative atom of one molecule is attracted to two unshared electrons of another molecule
What is ionic bond
A bond formed by the attractive between oppositely charged ions
What is metallic bond
A bond formed by the the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them
What is covalent bond
A bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electron
What is polyatomic ion
An ion made of two or more atoms
What is formula unit
Na+ ion and one Cl- ion is made of of NaCl
What is nonpolar covalent bond
Bonds like one, in which electrons are shared equally
What is polar covalent bond
An unequal sharing of electrons forms
What is empirical formula
The composition of a compound in terms of the relative numbers and kinds of atoms in the simplest ratio
What is molecular formula
A chemical formula that shows the number and kinds of atoms in a molecule but not the arranged meant of atoms
What is organic compound
A covalent lay bonded compound that contains carbon, excluding carbonates and oxides
What is polymer
A large molecule that is formed by more than five monomers, or small units
What is carbohydrate
Any organic compound that is made of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen and that provides nutrients to the cells of living things
What is proteins
An organic compound that is made of one or more chains of amino that is a principal compounding of all cells
What is amino acid
Any one of 20 different organic molecules that contains a Carboxyl and an amino group and that combined to form proteins
What is hydrocarbon
When a compound is made of only carbon and hydrogen atoms
What is alkane
Are hydrocarbons that have only single covalent bonds
What is alkene
They have at least one double covalent bond between carbon atoms. They are named like alkalis but with the ane ending replace ene
What is DNA
Are all natural polymers. Man made polymers are usually either plastics or fibers.
