Chapter 5 Grammar Flashcards
1
Q
Future & Imperfect Tense Basics
A
- present, future, and imperfect, together, make up the present system; we say this b/c:
- because they are all formed from the present stem (e.g. laudā-, monē-)
- because they all have a continuous aspect, indicating continuous action in the past, present, or future
-
Future:
- inserts tense sign -be (which most often becomes -bi) between the present stem and the personal endings
- usually translated w/ “will” (cōgitābō = “I will think”)
-
Imperfect:
- inserts tense sign -bā between the present stem and the personal endings
- variously translated:
- I was warning
- I kept warning
- I used to warn
