Chapter 5 - General Anatomy and Physiology, Circulation Flashcards
What is internal respiration?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide between the capillaries.
What is external respiration?
The exchange of oxygen and carbon dioxide from the air into the lungs and vice versa.
How is blood pressure measured?
Systolic Pressure / Diastolic pressure
What is a healthy, usual range blood pressure?
120/80
What are the four sites of where the pulse can be taken?
Carotid (neck)
Brachial (Inner surface of elbow)
Radial (Wrists)
Femoral (Top of inner thighs)
What is blood composed of?
Several cell types floating in Plasma
What does plasma look like?
A straw coloured fluid
What cells are in blood?
Erythrocytes
Leucocytes
Platelets
What are Erythrocytes?
Red blood cells
What are Leucocytes?
White blood cells
What are Platelets?
Thrombocytes (Fragments of larger blood cells called megakaryocytes)
What is the main function of Erythrocytes (red blood cells)?
To transport oxygen around the body
What special feature allows Erythrocytes (red blood cells) to transport oxygen around the body?
Lack of nucleus
What gives erythrocytes (red blood cells) their red colour?
Haemoglobin
What is the main function of Leucocytes (White blood cells)?
Defending the body against attack by micro-organisms and disease.
