Chapter 5 - General Anatomy and Physiology - Cell Biology Flashcards
Where is DNA held?
In the nucleus of all cells, apart from red blood cells (erythrocytes).
What are groups of tissues that perform different functions called?
Organs
What are the four basic types of cells in the human body?
Muscle Cells
Nerve Cells
Epithelial Cells
Connective Tissue Cells
What do muscle cells do?
Generate forces and produce motion
What do Nerve cells do?
Initiate and carry electrical impulses
What do Epithelial cells do?
Cover the body surfaces (skin)
Surround organs
Line hollow structures within the body
What do connective tissue cells do?
Connect parts of the body together by anchorage and support
All these cells require a source of fuel to produce energy. What is this fuel provided by?
The food we eat
What is the energy used for by the cells?
Homeostasis (maintain body temperature)
Movement for food gathering
Reproduction
