Chapter 5: Fire Behavior and Building Construction Flashcards
Four elements of fire
Fuel
Oxidizing agent (air)
Heat
Uninhibited chemical chain reaction
Three methods of heat transfer
Conduction-direct contact
Convection- circulation
Radiation- electromagnetic waves
Auto Exposure
Vertical spread of fire on the exterior of a building, usually exiting a window
Four stages of fire
Incipient- initial stage
Free burning- fire spread
Flash over- full involvement
Smoldering- combustion, no flame
entrainment
Process of oxygen being drawn into a fire
Back draft
the burning of heated gaseous products of combustion when oxygen is reintroduced into an environment
Void spaces
Hidden space in a building where fire can burn undetected
Smoke
Airborne solid and liquid particulates, and gases produced by fire
