Hispanic
term used to refer to individuals who were born in or trace the background of their families to one of the Spanish-speaking Latin American nations or to Spain
Latino
a descriptor among people who view themselves as coming from a Spanish-speaking background
Familialism
a cultural value in which individuals have a strong identification with and attachment to their nuclear and extended families and greatly value solidarity, loyalty, and reciprocity among family members
Familismo
very important for Hispanic mothers, who’re the family’s primary caretakers and nurturers
“field sensitive” cognitive styles
common among Hispanic children. They are sensitive to nonverbal indicators of feelings and learn best when interacting in situations where they experience warmth, responsiveness, and frequent attention. They often response well to physical touch and affection
Allocentrism (collectivism)
fundamental Hispanic value that emphasizes the objectives and needs of an in-group rather than emphasizing competition and individualism
Machismo
men are expected to be the dominant, strong, family providers
Marianismo
women are expected to be self-sacrificing, nurturing, and submissive to men
Personalismo
an emphasis on interpersonal relationships. Behaviors that convey include loyalty, honesty, generosity, hospitality, and willingness to help others. Many Hispanics will not engage in confrontation with others. They might say what they think the person wants to hear rather than being the bearers of bad news; they also might give ambiguous responses to avoid upsetting others
Dignidad (dignity)
important to hispanics, who strive to present themselves with dignity, especially in public. Dignity entails having a sense of pride and self-respect, which are often demonstrated through hard work and responsibility. It is shameful and humiliating to have one’s dignity violated by another person

one who has been taught skills in human relationships and who understands the necessity of treating each person with respect and dignity
curanderismo
a healing process believed to occur when fold medicine practices are used. often these practices are more prevalent in groups with less access to modern health (e.g., individuals who live in rural areas)
simpatica
emphasizes positive personal interactions that convey empathy for others, emphasize harmony in interpersonal relations, and deemphasize negative behaviors in circumstances of conflict. it is considered important to initiate conversations on a personal note before proceeding with business
