Islam
A monotheistic (one god) faith. Means surrender or obedience to the will of God
Muslim or Moslem
A follower of Islam
Muhammed or Mohammed
The prophet and founder of Islam
Quran or Koram
Sacred book of Islam. It has 30 parts, contained in 114 chapters. A central message is that submission to one god results in peace. The primary act of faith is to perform/obey the will of Allah in both public and private life.
Mecca
The principal city of Muslims.
Salat
Prayer. Muslim pray 5 times during the day
Zakat or the alms tax
Donate a percentage of their wages to help and support the poor and needy
Sawn
Fasting during Ramadan.
Ramadan
no food or drink from sunrise to sundown. It is 9th month of the lunar calendar.
Hajj
Pilgrimage to Mecca.
Spinster
A label given to single women over the age of 30
Hijab
Scarf
Burqa
Full body and face covering clothing
Imam
Religious leader from a local mosque
