Q
Fluid mosaic model
A
Mosaic of proteins floats in or on the fluid lipid bilayer like boars on a pond
1
Q
Membrane structure
A
Phospholipids arranged in a bilayer
Globular protiens inserted in the lipid bilayer
2
Q
Cellular membranes have 4 components
A
- Phospholipid bilayer
- flexible matrix, barrier to permeability - Transmembrane proteins
- integral membrane proteins- can move about - Interior protein network
- peripheral membrane proteins- structural support- attached to cytoskeleton, held to transmembrane proteins by ionic or hydrogen bonds - Cell surface marker
- glycoproteins ( attached to integral proteins) and glycolipids ( attached to phospholipid)
3
Q
Phospholipids
A
Structure consists of - glycerol - a 3 - carbon polyalchol - 2 fatty acids attached to the glycerol - non polar Abadan hydrophilic Spontaneous forms a bilayer - fatty acids are on the inside - phosphate groups are on both surfaces
4
Q
What spontaneously form bilayers?
A
Phospholipids
