biology chapter 2 Flashcards
Atomic structure
Atoms has protons, electrons, and neutrons
Nature of atoms
Matter - has mass and occupies space
All matter is composed of atoms
Proton
Positively charged particles
Located in the nucleus
Neutrons
Neutral particles
Located in the nucleus
Electrons
Negatively charged particles
Found in the orbitals surrounding the nucleus
Chemicals in the body
Carbon, hydrogen oxygen nitrogen 96.3%
Others sodium chlorine calcium phosphorus potassium sulfur iron magnesium
Chemical bonds
Ionic covalent hydrogen bonds
Molecules
Are groups of atoms held together in a stable association (o=o) o2
Compounds
Are molecules containing more than one type of element (H20)
Ionic bonds
Formed by the attraction of oppositely charged ions
Gain or loss of electrons forms ions
redox
Oxidation= loss of an electron Reduction= gain of electron
Elements
Valance electrons - number of electrons in the outermost energy level - if not “full” they are reactive elements
Inert (no reactive ) elements have all eight electrons
Energy levels
Radioactive isotopes
Atomic number
Number of protons equals the number of electrons
Element
Any substance that can’t be broken down to any other substance by ordinary chemical means
