Chapter 5 - Atomic Structure Flashcards
What is a nucleon?
Protons and neutrons.
What is an atomic number/proton number?
Number of protons in an atom.
What is the nucleon number also known as?
Mass number/relative atomic mass
A beryllium atom has 4 protons, 5 neutrons and 4 electrons. What is the mass of the atom&how to calculate it?
4 protons+5 neutrons=9
When an atom is neutral, this mean that?
The number is electrons is equal to the number of protons as the negative electrons cancel out the positive charges of the protons.
Define isotopes.
Isotopes are atoms of the same element with the same number of protons and electrons but different number of neutrons.
What properties of isotopes are being affected?
Only physical properties would be affected as physical properties are affected by mass. There would be a change in boiling point, density and mass.
What is the property of the isotopes that is not affected and why?
The chemical properties are not affected as chemical reactions only involve the valence electrons and not the protons and neutrons.
Define ion.
An ion is a charged particle formed a from an atom or a group of atoms by the loss or gain of electrons.
How do non-metal atoms form ions? What are the ions called?
Non-metal atoms gains electrons to form negative ions. The ions are called anion.
How to metal atoms form ions? What are the ions called?
Metal atoms lose electrons to form positive ions. The ions are called cations.
What is the relative charge and relative mass of a proton?
Mass: 1
Charger: +1
