Chapter 5 - ATC Services Flashcards
What is encompassed by the term ‘Air Traffic Service’ (ATS) and what do these different services provide?
ATC - Provided according to the particular circumstances and class of airspace
Air Traffic Advisory Service - In class F, so not in the UK
Flight Information Service (FIS) - Provided for the purpose of supplying advice and information useful for the safe and efficient conduct of flight.
In the UK it is provided in Class G airspace, known as the ‘UK Flight Information Services’.
Alerting Service - Notifies appropriate organisations re aircraft in need of SAR aid and assists such organisations as required
Lower Airspace Radar Service
What are the objectives of ATC?
Prevent collisions between aircraft
Prevent collisions on the manoeuvring area
Expedite and maintain an orderly flow of traffic
Provide advice and information
Notify appropriate organisations regarding aircraft in need of SAR assistance, and aid such organisations as required
To whom is Air Traffic Radar Control Service provided?
All IFR flights in CAS
All VFR flights in CAS (not A as VFR not allowed)
To all SVFR flights
All aerodrome traffic at controlled aerodromes
How must a pilot follow instructions from Air Traffic Radar Control Service?
Pilots operating IFR required to comply
VFR and SVFR will comply UNLESS THEY ADVISE THE CONTROLLER OTHERWISE
Generally, instructions, unless you advise you absolutely cannot for VFR of SVFR (e.g. going into cloud) are mandatory
Pilots must not change heading or level without prior approval of the radar controller.
What does a FIS pass info about?
Weather
Changes to serviceability of facilities
Conditions at aerodromes
Any other information likely to affect the safe conduct of flight
In Class G airspace, what does UK FIS consist of?
Basic Service
Traffic Service
Deconfliction Service
Procedural Service
Is Basic Service surveillance based (transponder)?
No
Does Basic service monitor the flight or provide traffic info?
No, avoidance of traffic is solely the pilot’s responsibility.
When is Basic Service available from the UK FIS?
VFR and IFR (not necessarily a good condition when in IMC due to reduced ability to lookout)
UK FIS Traffic Service passes information on RELEVANT traffic. Normally, when is traffic considered relevant.
When it appears the aircraft will pass within 3nm horizontally of your aircraft or within 3000ft vertically.
Controller aims to pass on info before the conflicting aircraft is within 5nm.
What are the deconfliction minima against uncoordinated traffic (when in receipt of deconfliction service)?
5nm laterally
3000ft vertically
What are the deconfliction minima against traffic being provided with an ATS by the same controller, or that have been subject to co-ordination (when in receipt of deconfliction service)?
3nm laterally
or
1000ft/500ft vertically
What are the deconfliction minima of deconfliction service
500ft or 1000ft vertically
Where is LARS (Lower Airspace Radar Service) available?
Up to FL100
Within approx. 30nm of ATS units
What type of Radar Services are provided by LARS?
Traffic Service
Deconfliction Service
