Q

What does the MAA state as the right of way on the ground?

Q

What are the VFR rules in CAS?

A

AT FL100 or above:
Flight vis = 8km
Distance from cloud = 1500m horiz, 1000ft vert.

Below FL100
Flight vis = 8km if speed greater than 250kts, 5km AT 250kts or less
Distance from cloud = 1500m horiz, 1000ft vert.

Below 3000ft AMSL:
Helicopter may fly COCISS, with flight vis 1500m

Q

What are the VFR rules outside CAS?

A

VMC minima are the same as inside CAS, except:

At or below 3000ft AMSL:
Over 140kts - Flight vis 5km

At 140kts or less - COCISS + Flight vis 1500m

9
Q

What is a Special VFR flight?

A

Rules which allow flights where the pilot is unable to comply with IFR, in circumstances where VFR flight is not permitted.

I.e. a flight cleared into a control zone using VFR in meteorological conditions below VMC.

Q

When may SVFR be used?

A

May be used in control zones (not control areas or airways) in:
IMC
Class A airspace at all times

Q

What are the responsibilities of a pilot on a SVFR flight?

A

Comply with ATC instructions

COCISS, flight vis no less than 1500m

Remain at a speed of 140kts or less

Avoid Aerodrome Traffic Zones unless prior permission has been obtained

12
Q

What will ATC do if clearance is given for a SVFR flight?

A

Provide radar service, incl. instructions re routing, levels, etc

Separate SVFR flight from other SVFR and IFR

Pass traffic info on VFR ON REQUEST + avoidance info

Inform the pilot when entering or leaving CAS

Q

When flying IFR inside CAS, the pilot must…?

Q

Where in the UK is IFR mandatory?

A

IMC

In Class A airspace, except where SVFR is permitted.

In Class C airspace when VFR operations are not permitted.

16
Q

What is the semi-circular rule?

A

It is used above the transition level.

Aircraft flying East = Odd FLs (thousands, e.g. FL50, FL70, etc)

Aircraft flying West = Even FLs (thousands, e.g. FL40, FL60, etc)

17
Q

Can FL195 be assigned as a cruising level?

A

No

18
Q

How is traffic sequenced below FL290?

A

2000ft

19
Q

How is traffic sequenced AT AND ABOVE FL290?

A

4000ft

20
Q

How can VFR flights use the semi-circular rule?

A

They can fly at the intermediate 500ft levels, e.g. FL45, FL65, etc when Westbound and FL55, FL75, etc when flying Eastbound.

21
Q

The UK has adopted Reduced Vertical Separation Minimum (RVSM), what does this mean?

Where can details of this be found?

A

Aircraft at intervals of 2000ft up to FL420, rather than FL290.

4000ft intervals above FL420.

Details in the FIH (yellow book).
