Chapter 5 and Creativity/Problem Solving Flashcards
The inability to fall asleep or stay asleep. Approximately 30% of adults suffer from this at some point. About 20% have chronic.Acute vs. Situational: Acute-more prolonged; Situational- driven by stressors
Insomnia
Nocturnal fright that you usually don’t remember because they occur in NREM sleep. Not as common. Results in waking up screaming, can’t wake person up.

Manifest content- the plot of the dream. Latent content: The underlying meaning of a dream. Evidence: frontal lobe is very inactive during REM sleep but the limbic system is very active. That tells us that fighting/femating is active.
Manifest content: the plot of the dream
Freud’s theory on dreams
Theory that dreams help file away memories
Evidence: Brain scans
Information processing theory
Theory that we need dreams to keep active and if not we lose those neurons, we need dreams to keep those pathways alive
Develop/preserve neural pathways
Dreams are our brain’s way of making sense of random neural firings; Chopped
Activation Synthesis Theory
Theory that dreams are developmentally bound and help maturation; As we age, our dreams match what age we are.
Cognitive Development
Our awareness of ourselves and our environment
Consciousness
All the different states of thoughts, feelings, perceptions occupying the mind when you are reasonably alert
Waking consciousness
States that are notably different from normal, waking consciousness
Altered states of consciousness
