Chapter 5 Flashcards
integumentary system
consists of skin, hair, nails, and cutaneous
what is skin
membrane covering external surface of body
-two layers
What is the epidermis
superficial epithelium
top layer of skin (visible)
What is the dermis
deeper connective tissue
layer under epidermis
structure of skin
most 1-2 mm thick
-ranges from .5 mm to 6 mm
thick skin
epidermis about .5 mm thick
- thick layers of dead cells
- palms, soles, fingers, toes
- sweat glans
- no hair follicles/sebaceous glands
thin skin
epidermis about .1 mm thick
- rest of body
- hair follicles
what does the dermis contain
.2 mm- 6 mm
- collagen
- contains elastic and reticular fibers
- contains cells of fibrous connective tissue
- blood vessels, nerve endings
- sweat and sebaceous glans
- hair and nails rooted here
hypodermis
looser connective tissue, more adipose tissue
- binds skin to muscle and other tissues
- energy reservoir
- provides thermal insulation
- thickness difference between genders
melanin
produced by melanocytes
- transferred to keratinocytes
- greater quantities produced in darker skin
- more spread out
- degrade more slowly
freckles and moles
local concentrations of melanin
cyanosis
“blueness of skin”
oxygen deficiency in blood
erythema
abnormal redness of skin
hematoma
bruise, mass of clotted blood
pallor
temporary pale color
little cutaneous blood flow
