Chapter 5 Flashcards
The cell is the structural and functional unit of life.
Schlieden and Schwann Cell Theory
All living things are composed of cells, have the same basic chemical composition, come from pre-existing cells; cells are the structural and functional unit of life, all energy flow of life occurs within cells.
Modern Cell Theory
Separates the cell from its environment; where chemical reactions occur; regulates the transport of nutrients and wastes; surface proteins allows the recognition of self.
Plasma Membrane Functions
The jelly-like material filling the space between the plasma membrane and the nuclear membrane.
Cytoplasm
Specialized structures within the cell, aiding its maintenance.
Organelle
Smallest Cell
Bacteria
Largest Cells
Debatable
A type of Cell lacking a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles.
Prokaryotic Cells
The region of the prokaryotic cell that contains its DNA; bacteria are the only prokaryotes.
Nucleoid
A cell that has a membrane-bound nucleus and other organelles; examples include plants, animals , Protists, fungi.
Eukaryotic Cells
