Chapter 1 Flashcards
An organized collection of dynamic information gathered through experimentation and based on evidence.
Science
A logical way of answering questions and/or problem solving.
NOTE: must be performed in order, for validity; 5 general steps.
Scientific Method
Accurate observations with the formulation of questions.
Unprejudiced Observations
A proposed explanation for a set of observations; always written as a statement that can be tested.
Hypothesis
One that is designed to test only a single variable; all other conditions are constants, or identical; experimental condition can then be compared to the control condition for analysis; test is repeated.
Controlled Experiment
The “natural” condition or the “standard” for comparison.
Control Condition
Identical to the control condition except the one variable (independent variable) that you are testing is different; the dependent variable is the responding variable.
Experimental Condition
A record of what happened during the “experiment.”
Results
The experimenter’s thoughts and/or analysis after comparing the results with the hypothesis.
Conclusion
A long-standing and highly supported explanation that is unlikely to be overturned. NOTE: is subject to change as information is gathered.
