Chapter 5 Flashcards
Chemical Bond
A chemical bond is the attractive force that holds atoms or ions together.
Chemical Structure
A chemical structure is the arrangement of atoms in a substance.
Bond Length
A bond length is the average distance between the nuclei of two bonded atoms.
Bond Angle
A bond angle is the angle formed by two bonds to the same atom.
Hydrogen Bond
Atttractions between water molecules are called hydrogen bonds.
Ionic Bond
Ionic bonds are formed between oppositely charged ions.
Metallic Bond
A metallic bond is a bond formed by the attraction between positively charged metal ions and the electrons around them.
Covalent Bond
A covalent bond is a bond formed when atoms share one or more pairs of electrons.
Polyatomic Ion
A polyatomic ion is an ion made of two or more atoms.
Formula Unit
A formula unit in chemistry is the empirical formula of any ionic or covalent network solid compound used as an independent entity for stoichiometric calculations.
Nonpolar Covalent Bond
Nonpolar covalent bonds are a type of chemical bond where two atoms share a pair of electrons with each other.
Polar Covalent Bond
Bonds that are partly ionic are called polar covalent bonds.
Empirical Formula
An Empirical formula tells the composition f a compound in terms of the relative numbers and kinds of atoms in the simplest ratio.
Molecular Formula
A Molecular formula is a chemical formula that shows the number and kinds of atoms in a molecule.
Organic Compound
An Organic compound is a covalently bonded compound that contains carbon, excluding carbonates and oxides.
