Chapter 2 Matter Flashcards
Chemistry
Chemistry is the study of matter and the changes it undergoes.
Matter
Matter is something that has mass and takes up space.
Element
Element is a substance that can not be broken down.
Atom
An atom is the smallest unit of matter.
Compound
A compound is a substance made of two chemically combined atoms.
Molecules
Molecules are are the smallest units of a substance that stay the same physically and chemically.
Chemical formula
A chemical formula is the mixture of symbols and numbers that represent a substance.
Pure substance
A pure substance is an element or compound that has definite chemical and physical properties to it.
Mixture
A mixture is the mixing of two substances without chemically mixing them.
Heterogeneous mixtures
Heterogeneous mixtures are when the substances weren’t evenly distributed.
Homogeneous mixture
A homogeneous mixture is when the substances are evenly distributed.
Miscible
Miscible substances can be mixed
Immiscible
Immiscible mixtures can not be mixed
Melting point
The pressure and temperature, where a solid becomes a liquid.
Boiling point
The pressure and temperature at which liquids become gases.
State
The physical form of a substance. Such as a solid, liquid, and gas.
Density
Density is the ratio of the mass of a substance to the volume of the substance.
Physical change
A change where the substance changes in looks, shape, or form, but does not change in chemical properties.
Chemical change
Chemical change is when a substance changes its chemical properties by firming into a new substance.
Reactivity
Reactivity is when one substance is able to react with another substance
Flammability
Flammability is when a substance is able to react with oxygen and burn when exposed to a flame.
