language collection within a family, through other language. not as many differences.

the roman empire spread latin as they conquered areas. the language changed, creating others.

US settlers had new experiences which led to a new vocabulary. spelling and pronunciation gradually changed over time.

distribution shows a group’s fate. It shows trends - globalization and local diversity

it’s the language of international communication. 1/3 of the population has it as their official language. it diffuses pop culture and sciences, as well as loses original languages.
how did english diffuse? (C)
through the british empire and colonization. it changed (vocab, pronunciation, etc.) and joined with other languages (ex: franglais and spanglish)

most material is in english and you need to know it to read. it’s growing less and less dominant, but it still is. other countries have domain names (japan=.jp) but Us doesn’t have one.
