chapter 5 Flashcards
Suffrage
Right to vote
Black Codes
laws passed shortly after the Civil War designed to keep recently liberates slaves in conditions of servitude. Stopped by a Constitutional Amendment.
Jim Crow Laws
institutionalized racism that systematically denied rights to poor blacks (primarily in the South) while still avoiding a direct violation of the 15th Amendment.
Poll Taxes
Some states required people to pay a poll tax in order to “go to the polls” and vote. This systematically disenfranchised poor black voters.
De jure
segregation mandated by law
- Whites only public restrooms, water fountains
- Bus seating, diners, restrictive housing contracts
De facto
segregation by choice and individual selection (think of a middle school lunch room and the gender divide)
Civil Disobedience
a strategy of both non-compliance and yet non-violence. For example, break unjust laws by walking into a segregated café, but don’t hurt anyone.
