Chapter 5 Flashcards
An Executive Order which established the National Committee on Biosafety of the Philippines (NCBP).
Executive Order No. 430, series of 1990
Several international conventions and agreements have been established to address the global implications of biotechnology. These include:
● The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
● The Convention on Biological Diversity
This protocol seeks to ensure the safe transfer, handling, and use of living modified organisms (LMOs).
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
It establishes a clearing-house mechanism to facilitate information
exchange and risk assessment.
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety has adapted on ________ __ ____ and entered into force on ________ __ ____
The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety has adapted on January 29, 2000 and entered into force on September 11, 2003
The Cartagena Protocols include….
Advance Informed Agreement
Biosafety Clearing-House
Risk Assessment
A procedure for ensuring that countries are provided with the information necessary to make informed decisions before agreeing to the import of such organisms into their territory.
Advance Informed Agreement (AIA)
It is stablished to facilitate the exchange of information on living modified organisms and to assist countries in the implementation of the Protocol.
Biosafety Clearing-House
Pursuant to Article __, paragraph _, of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the
Conference of the Parties, by its decision ____, established an ___ ___ ___ ___ ___ on Biosafety to develop a draft protocol on biosafety, specifically focusing on transboundary movement of any living modified organism resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effect on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity.
Pursuant to Article 19, paragraph 3, of the Convention on Biological Diversity, the
Conference of the Parties, by its decision II/5, established an Open-ended Ad Hoc
Working Group on Biosafety to develop a draft protocol on biosafety, specifically
focusing on transboundary movement of any living modified organism resulting
from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effect on the conservation and
sustainable use of biological diversity.
The Open-ended Ad Hoc Working Group on Biosafety held six meetings between____ ____ and ________ ____
July 1996 and February 1999
On _______ __, ____, the Conference of the Parties, by its decision EM-I/3, adopted the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity and approved interim arrangements pending its entry into force. It established an Open-Ended Ad Hoc _____ _____ _____ ____ on biosafety (ICCP) with a mandate to undertake the preparations necessary for the first meeting of the Parties to the Protocol.
On 29 January 2000, the Conference of the Parties, by its decision EM-I/3, adopted the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity and approved interim arrangements pending its entry into force. It established an open-ended ad hoc Intergovernmental Committee for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (ICCP) with a mandate to undertake the preparations necessary for the first meeting of the Parties to the Protocol.
The Intergovernmental Committee for the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety (ICCP) was
established in decision ____ adopting the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety, to
undertake the preparations necessary for the first meeting of the Parties to the Protocol.
EM-I/3
The Convention on Biological Diversity was finalized in Nairobi in ____ ____ and opened for signature at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro on ____ _, ____. It entered into force on
________ __, ____.
The Convention on Biological Diversity was finalized in Nairobi in May 1992 and opened for signature at the United Nations Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in Rio de Janeiro on 5 June 1992. It entered into force on
29 December 1993.
After several years of negotiations, the Protocol, known as the Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety to the Convention on Biological Diversity, was finalized and adopted in Montreal on
January 29, 2000
Objective of Cartagena protocol on Biosafety
To contribute to ensuring an adequate level of protection in the field of the safe transfer, handling, and use of living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology that may have adverse effects on the conservation and sustainable use of biological diversity, taking also into account risks to human health, and specifically focusing on transboundary movements.
