The purpose of the IMDG code classification system is:
- To distinguish between goods which are dangerous for transport and those which are not
- To identify the dangers which are presented by dangerous goods in transport
- To ensure that the correct measures are taken to enable these goods to be transported safely without risk to persons or property
What are the 6 classifications of dangerous goods
1- explosives
2- gases
3- flammable liquids
4- flammable solids
5- oxidising substances
6- toxic/infectious substances
7- radioactive materials
8- corrosive substances
9- MISC. Dangerous substances and articles (including NOS- Not Otherwise Specified)
How many divisions are explosives categorised into and what are they
6:
1.1 Substances/articles with mass explosion hazard
1.2 Substances/articles with a projection hazard but not a mass explosion hazard
1.3 Substances/articles with a fire hazard and either a minor blast hazard or a minor projection hazard or both
1.4 Substances/articles which present no significant hazard
1.5 Very insensitive substances which have a mass explosion hazard
1.6 Extremely insensitive articles which do not have a mass explosion hazard
How many divisions are gases categorised into and what are they
3:
2.1 Flammable gases
2.2 Non flammable, non toxic gases
2.3 Toxic gases
Examples:
Nitrogen
Propane
Acetylene
What is used to classify flammable liquids
Give off a flammable vapour at or below 60°C (flashpoint)
Vapour pressure, boiling point and viscosity may also be used for classification and assignment to packing group
Examples:
Gasoline
Resin solutions, paint
Alcohol
How many divisions are flammable solids categorised into and what are they

Class 4.3 Substances which, in contact with water, emit flammable gases
Examples:
Matches
Magnesium

Class 6.1 – Toxic substances (may harm or be fatal for human beings if swallowed, inhaled or contacted with tissue)
Class 6.2 - Infectious substances (Contain pathogens such as bacteria, viruses, parasites and other agents which can cause diseases in humans and animals)
Examples:
Pesticides
Hospital waste
who classifies radioactive materials
experts
What are corrosive substances
Chemical action causing severe damage in contact with other surfaces
Examples:
Sulphuric acid
what does PSN mean
proper ship name
What do the UN number and PSN do
uniquely identify dangerous goods to internationally enable standardized, rapid and precise identification during transport to ensure the correct handling, stowage, segregation etc, and in the event of an emergency, ensure that the correct procedures are followed.
Some general safety considerations and fire precautions that as OOW would have to consider when loading or carrying dangerous good
x5
Dangerous substances should be loaded or unloaded only under the supervision of a responsible officer.
Dangerous substances should not be loaded unless they have been packed and labelled in compliance with the IMDG Code.
When crew are required to handle consignments containing dangerous substance, adequate information should be available as to the nature of such substances and any special precautions to be observed.
In the event of accidental exposure to dangerous substances, reference should be made to the IMDG Medical Guide for remedial action.
Suitable precautions, such as the provision of special lifting gear, should be taken to prevent damage to receptacles containing dangerous substance.
