Chapter 5 Flashcards
Atmospheric Circulation
Intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ)
The zone of low pressure and clouds near the equator.
Coriolis effect
Rotation of pressure gradient flow where the momentum of a body is the product of its mass and its velocity.
Hadley Cell
The belt of circulation between the ITCZ and the horse latitudes.
Polar easterlies
Low altitude winds blow away from the pole and are deflected toward the west by the Coriolis effect. Mariners named them this according to the direction the winds come from.
westerlies
These prevailing mid-latitude winds are known as mid-latitude westerlies. Mariners named them according to the direction they come from.
Fronts
When air masses of different temperatures meet.
Cold front
Cold air advances into an area previously occupied by warmer air. May be marked by a steep wall of cumulonimbus cloud that may rise to the tropopause.
Warm front
Warm air advances into an area previously occupied by colder air.
