Chapter 5 Flashcards
Definition of volcanoes
A fissure in the ground through which lava erupts and the events that accompany the eruption
What can Volcanoes also be?
Volcanoes can also be cinder cones formed by erupted lava
Why do we need to measure all geologic events?
So we can pass on these measurements for analysis to help identify/determine new or previous geologic events
What are volcanoes associated with?Name two crazy eruptions?
Volcanoes are associated with danger
Mt. Versuvius in 79 AD- In Italty
This eruption buried two cities
-Pompeii(killied 3,000 people and buried them in volcanic ash)
-Herculaneum
Mud Flower covered town(mud flow came from water and ash being mixed)(this killed 30 people)
Volcanoes are predictable or unpredictable
unpredictable
Gasses from volcanoes are
dangerous to humans and plants
Fatality from volcanoes vary according to
the strength of the volcano
Volcanoes are beatiful and be be used for
skiing, hiking etc
The soil around volcanoes are what for plants
are very good and productive for plants
When digging for bodies in pompeii they discovered what?
Discovered the science of archeology
Volcanoes form what materials?
blocks, concrete and stone
Colling of magna around volcanoes around water has
been converted to steam to produce electricy in countries like(Italy , Iceland)

Where are Volcanos usually found
They are found along plates boundaires and where most of earths most dangerous events occur
The most expolsive volcanoes are found around what types of boundaires?
convergent boundaries(where plates subdect)
At divergent boundaires how are volcanoes?
They are mild and productive
Where do more volcanos occur? Northern or Southern Heimshphre
Northern Hemisphere
Measures for Volcanics are based on what?
Scales are based on criteria for description of eruption explosivity
What is the main volcanic exlositivy called?
Its called volcanic explosivity Index
What are some columns on the index and describe them?
General Description(how explosive it was using general words like large, small)
Cloud Column Height(how high the cloud went up)
Qualitative Description(none general words to describe the explosion)
Classification(classifying the volcanic based on those descriptions)
Types of Volcanos
The type of volcanic is based on the shape of the cone.
-It can either be quiet or explosive
-The cone can give you a idea on how dangerous the volcano will be
Quiet Eruptions(Describe the one.)
Shield Cone: Convex upward shield
-Produced from gentle pouring
-They have fissure eruptions which are eruptions of lava from long cracks
(Look at the picture in the notes)
Explosive Eruptions (Name all three and desribe)
Composite Cone: Concave upward body of lava
-Very tall
Lava Done: Bulb-like masses like high silica, glassy lava
Cinder Cones: Small and numerous cones
(Look at the picture in notes)
Prediction and Migitiaion of Volcanoes(Prediction Part)
Poeple try to predict volcanos to have people execute and prepare before hand
-They have been using studis of seismic activity to predict them
Prediction and Migitiaion of Volcanoes(Migation Part)
Mitigation measures for volcanic eruptions usually involve implementation of control structures to reduce the effects of flooding; land zoning and evacuation; and building reinforcement.
