Chapter 5 Flashcards
What are macromolecules?
Large molecules composed of thousands of covalently connected atoms
What are polymers?
Long molecules consisting of many similar building blocks
What are monomers?
Small, individual building block molecules
What is a dehydration reaction?
When two monomers bond together through the loss of a water molecule (forming a new bond)
What is hydrolysis?
A reaction that is essentially the reverse of the dehydration reaction (adds a water molecule, breaking a bond)
Storage polysaccharides
- Starch
- Glycogen
Structural polysaccharides
- Cellulose (alpha and beta)
- Chitin
What are the three types of lipids?
1) Fats
2) Phospholipids
3) Steroids
Saturated vs. Unsaturated fats
Saturated: Have maximum number of hydrogen atoms possible and no double bonds
Unsaturated: Have one or more double bonds
What is trans fat?
Fat artificially converted from unsaturated to saturated
