Chapter 5 Flashcards
What holds phospholipids within the plama membrane together?
hydrophobic interaction
What enhances fluidity of the membrane?
Unsaturated hydrocarbon tails
What embeds in plasma membrane that acts as a temperature buffer?
Cholesterol
What do proteins do to plasma membrane?
transport molecules enzymatic activity signal transduction cell-cell transduction intracellular junctions
Integral proteins have what?
oen or more regions embedded in or transversing through the plasma membrane
Peripheral proteins? not embedded in plasma membrane
not embedded in plasma membrane
What is glycosylation important for?
Cell-cell recognition
What do differences in glycosylation account for? (4 things)
- allow cells to properly differentiate during development
- distinguish different blood types
- identifies “forgeign” cells
- tissue rejection
What are aquaporins?
integral membrane proteins that form pores in the cell membrane and allow water to diffuse acros the otherwise hydrophobic cell membrane
What is endocytosis?
transport of particles into the cell
What are the three types of endocytosis and what do they do?
Phagocytosis- cell eating
Pinocytosis- cell drinking
Receptor-mediated- requres binding to specific receptors
