Chapter 3 Flashcards
What are fatty acids made up of?
Hydrocarbon chains with a carboxyl group
Difference between saturated and unsaturated fatty acids?
Saturated- no double bonded Carbons
Unsaturated- one or more double bonds
Difference between dehydration reaction ad hydrolysis?
Dehyd- monomers form polymers by removal of water
hydro- polymers are broken down my addition of water
How many carbons to monosaccharides have?
3-6
What is the covalent bond between two monosaccharides called?
glycosidic
3 classes of lipids?
fats, phospholipids, steroids
Names of purines?
Adenine (A)
Guanine (G)
Names of Phyrimidines?
Thymine (T) Cytosine (C) and Uracil (U)
What makes nucleic acids acidic?
Phosphate
What is denaturation?
the loss of a protein’s conformation which usually renders the protein biologically inactive
What are chaperone proteins?
Help newly-formed proteins fold properly and help renature proteins that are denatured
