chapter 5 Flashcards
what is the process of photosynthesis?
Plants use water and carbon dioxide to form glucose and oxygen
what is cellulose
uses glucose(monomer) to make cellulose(polysaccharide) (cellulose is most of the cell wall)
what are autotrophs
organisms that can get energy without eating other organisms
what are photoautotrophs?
organisms that can make organic molecules out of light energy
what is the chemical equation of photosynthesis?
6CO2 + 6H2O (sunlight->) C6H12O6 + 6O2
carbon dioxide + water -> sugar (carbohydrate) + oxygen
what is carbon fixation?
when carbon turns into an organic, usable form (glucose)
Chloroplast
Where photosynthesis takes place
chlorophyll
light-absorbing, responsible for the green pigment and is important to photosynthesis
Mesophyll
tissue in the leaf
Stomata
pores that let in carbon dioxide and releases oxygen
veins
is where the water is delivered to after being absorbed by the roots
What is the dense fluid in the chloroplast called
Stroma
what is the stack called?
grana
what is space in between the stack called
thylakoid
What is a reduction
the gain of electrons and hydrogen ions (h+)
what is oxidation?
the loss of electrons and hydrogen ions (or the gain of oxygen)
What is stage one of photosynthesis
light reaction; light energy is turned into chemical energy and O2 through the thylakoid membrane
water is split to make O2
What is made when H ions are reduced in NADP+
NADPH
What cycle is NADPH traveled to
The calvin cycle
What is used to power the calvin cycle
Light reaction generates ATP which provides chemical energy for the calvin cycle
What kind of energy does sunlight contain?
Electromagnetic energy / radiation
What do Electromagnetic energy travel in?
waves
The shorter the wave…
the greater the energy
pigments…
are where light molecules are absorbed and are built into the thylakoid membrane
different wave lengths could…
result in different color shown in the plant
in the carbon cycle, what do photosynthesis and cellular respiration share?
products and reactants (formula reversed)
