Chapter 48 Cardiovascular System Flashcards
what is the composition of blood?
blood plasma, red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets
what is the role of blood plasma?
it is 92% water and contains nutrients, wastes, and hormones
what is the role of platelets?
cell fragments that pinch off from larger cells in the bone marrow, function in formation of blood clots
what is the role of white blood cells?
also called leukocytes, have nuclei and can migrate out of capillaries into tissue fluid, less than 1% of blood cells
what is the role of red blood cells?
also called erythrocytes, lack nuclei and hematocrit is the fraction of the total blood volume, about 5 million per microliter of blood
role of the cardiovascular system?
delivers oxygen, nutrients, hormones, and other important substances to cells and organs in the body
what is the difference between veins and arteries?
arteries carry blood away from the heart, and veins carry blood towards the heart
what does aerial blood pressure do?
can be measured with a sphygmomanometer
what does systolic blood pressure do?
the peak pressure at which ventricles are contracting
what does diastolic blood pressure do?
the minimum pressure between heartbeats at which the ventricles are relaxed
how does blood move in and out of the heart?
through the arteries and veins
