parthenogenesis is the development of a new individual from an unfertilized egg
What is hermaphroditism?
individual has both male and female reproductive systems, they can self fertilize or mate

what are estrous cycles?
estrous cycles are characteristic of most mammals; endometrium is reabsorbed by uterus, heat period, varies from species to species
what are menstrual cycles?
menstrual are only in humans and some primates, endometrium is shed in menstruation and sexual receptivity is always
what is oogenesis?
the development of a mature egg, immature eggs form in female embryo
what do FSH and LH stimulate?
FSH and LH stimulate follicle to grow in follicular phase
what is important in the first 14 days?
FSH and estradiol
when is progesterone important?
in the second 14 days, secreted by corpus luteum, thicken the endometrium
What causes LH surge?
elevated estradiol level peaks

follicular, ovulation, luteal
in males what does FSH and LH do?
FSH creates sertoli cells, LH regulates Leydig cells which secrete testosterone and promote spermatogenesis
What is testosterone involved in and give an example?
In secondary male characteristics, like having a beard
What does GnRH do?
GnRH directs the release of FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary
first trimester is the main period of?
organogenesis: development of the body organs
where does embryo get nutrients for the first 2 weeks?
from the endometrium
what happens in the second trimester?
fetus grows and becomes more active
what happens in the third trimester?
the fetus grows and fills the space, induces and regulates labor
spermatogenesis vs oogenesis
spermatogenesis is all throughout adolescence and adulthood, all four products of meiosis develop into sperm but only 1/4 becomes an egg
what does estradiol do in regards to oxytocin?
estradiol activates oxytocin receptors on uterus
