Chapter 20 Flashcards
What are restriction enzymes?
Restriction enzymes cut DNA molecules at specific DNA sequences called restriction sites
What do restriction enzymes produce?
A restriction enzyme makes many cuts that yield restriction fragments, if in a staggered way it produces sticky ends
What do restriction enzymes produce?
A restriction enzyme makes many cuts that yield restriction fragments, if in a staggered way it produces sticky ends
what do sticky ends do?
sticky ends can bond with complementary sticky ends of other fragments
what is DNA ligase?
Dna ligase is an enzyme that seals the bonds between restriction fragments
What is a totipotent cell?
A totipotent cell can generate a complete new organism; generally in plants
what is a pluripotent cell?
embryonic stem cells are pluripotent meaning they are capable of differentiating into many different cell types
what is an induced pluripotent stem cell?
ips cells can perform most functions of embryonic stem cells
what are multipotent stem cells?
adult stem cells are multipotent, can generate multiple cell types but not all and are used to replace nonreproducing cells; ex: bone marrow can become any blood cell type

did dolly have aging problems?
they showed no signs of premature aging, joint problems from being kept inside and fed too many treats
