Chapter 4.4 Flashcards
What is an Independent event?
an occurrence of one event that has no effect on the probability that the other event will occur; no change
e.g. pulling a card then RETURNING it and pullng another
pg. 217
What is a Dependent event?
an occurrence of one event that has an effect on the probability of the other event; change
e.g. pulling a card and then another w/o returning the first
pg. 217
What is the equation for multiple successes when the events A and B are independent?
P(A and B)=P(A)xP(B)
pg. 219
What is Conditional Probability?
When the events are independent and you’re finding the probability that the event B will occur given that the event A has already occurred;
Equation:P(B|A)=P(B given A)
e.g. What is the P a card is a Queen, given that it’s a face? P(Q|F)
pg. 222
What is the equation for multiple successes when the events A and B are dependent?
P(A and B)=P(A)xP(A|B)
pg. 224
