Cellphone Use Exceptions
- to report an emergency situation
- while parked on the shoulder of a roadway
- while stopped due to normal traffic being obstructed and the vehicle is in neutral or park.
All drivers and passengers (front and back seat) ages 8 or older must wear safety belts
even if quipped with air bags.
Passengers under age 8 must be secured in an appropriate child restrain system.
It also applies to trucks with only a front seat equipped with safety belts.

It is recommended that children ages 12 and younger be properly secured in the back seat.
If a child under age 8 must ride in the front passenger seat with an active air bag, he/she should be in a properly installed, appropriate forward-facing child safety seat.
Rear-facing child safety seats should be secured only in the back seat of a vehicle
and
should never be installed in front of an active air bag.
If the back seat of the vehicle is not equipped with lap/shoulder type safety belts, a child wighing more than 40 pounds may be transported in the back seat without a booster seat, secured with a lap belt only.
Note: All children under age 8 must be properly secured in an appropriate child safety restraint system.
Speed Limits
Insterstate and Tollaways - 70 mph
Highways with 4 lanes - 65 mph
Other highways and rural areas - 55 mph
City/Town Areas - 30 mph
Alleys - 15 mph
School Zones - 20 mph (on School Days between 7am and 4pm)
Emergency/Maintenance Vehicles
If a lane change is not possible,
- reduce speed
- proceed with caution
Illinois Law prohibits ___ within 500 feet of an emergency scene

Passing
You must return to your lane before you get within 200 feet of an oncoming vehicle.
100ft - 30m
200 ft - 60m
When passing a bicyclist or pedestrian who is riding or walking on the road or shoulder of the raodway, you must keep a minimum of 3 feet between your vehicle and the bicyclist or pedestrian.
Passing on a 2-lane, 2-way roadway
is NOT allowed
- in an area marked for no passing by a solid yellow line on your side of the center of the roadway or signs
- on a hill or curve where it is not possible to see oncoming vehicles.
- Within 100 ft of an intersection or railroad crossing
- when the view is blocked within 100 ft of any bridge, viaduct or tunner.
- When a vehicle has stopped at a crosswalk or intersection to allow a pedestrain to cross.
- in a construction zone - all construction zones in Illinois are no passing zone.
- in any school zones in an unincorporated area.
- in any posted school zone area in an unincorporated area
- when a school bus has stopped to load and discharge passengers.
Signaling
Business/residential areas - a continuous turn signal for a least 100 ft before turning
Other areas - at least 200 ft
U-Turns
You must not turn around on curves and hills** unless you can see for **at least 500 ft in all directions.
Hazard Signal
Rotaries and Roundabouts
Traffic travels counterclockwise.
School Buses
A warming wil be given by the school buy at least 100 ft (200 ft in rural areas) in advance of a stop
You must remain stopped until
- the stop signal arm is no longer extended
- the flashing lights are turned off
or
the driver signals you to pass
On a 4-lane roadway (2 lanes in each direction) where a bus is stopped in the oppisite direction from which you are traveling, you are not required to stop your vehicle but should drive with caution.
Railroad Crossings
Proceed only after
- the gate is all the way up
- the lights are no longer flashing
- You have visually checked all the tracks for any additional oncoming trains or railwaod equipment
Railroad Crossings
Approaching a railroad crossing with no lights or gates
- you should slow down
- look in both directions on the track for oncoming trains or railroad equipment
- proceed with caution aceross the railroad crossing
Parallel Parking
(A) Parking on streets with 2-way traffic
Park so the right-han wheels are parallel to and within 12 inches of the curve
12 inches - 30 cm
(B) Parking on a 1-way street or road
Park within 12 inches of the right or left curve
Safety Zone
the area of a roadway set aside for pedestrians
ex) bus top
No Stopping - no dropping people off or picking them up
No Standing - can drop off or pick up people
but can’t load/unload things from cars/trucks
No Parking - can pick up/drop off/load/unload
but can’t leave the car alone
Stopping, standing or parking is prohibited:
(1) on the roadway side of any parked vehicle (double parking)
(2) on a sidewalk, crosswalk or within an intersection
(3) Between a safety zone (ex. bus stop) and the adjacent curb
(4) Beside or oppsite any street excavation or obstruction
(5) On any bridge, overpass, railroad track or within a highway tunnel
(6) on any controlled acess roadway
Standing or parking a vehicle, whether occupied or not, is prohibited
(1) In front of a public or private driveway
(2) Within 15 ft of a fire hydrant
(3) Within 20 ft of a fire station driveway or crosswalk at an inersection
(4) Within 30 ft of a STOP sign, YIELD sign or traffic control signal
Additional Laws
Drivers may NOT
- Wear a headset while driving (Use of a single-sided headset or earpeice with a whireless/cellphone device is permitted while driving)
- Driver over fire hoses (unless permitted)
- Tow one vehicle with another except by a drawbar (the distance between 2 cars should not exceed 15 ft with 2 chains or cables)
- Remove a wrecked or damaged vehicle from the roadway without remoing lass glass and other debris.
- No more than 3 persons should ride in the front seat of a vehicle
- Ride in a house trailer while it is being moved
- Operate or permit to be operated any sound system at a volumn that can be heard 75 ft or more fron a vehicle being driving on a highway
