Chapter 4 Tissues Lecture Flashcards
Groups of cells similar in structure that perform common or related function
Tissues
Study of tissues
Histology
4 Basic types of tissues
epithelial, connective, muscle, and nervous tissue
tissue is preserved with solvent
Fixed
cut into slices thin enough to transmit light or electrons
Sectioned
a sheet of cells that covers body surfaces or cavities
Epithelial tissue
upper free side, is exposed to surface or cavity
Apical surface
lower attached side, faces inwards toward body
Basal Surface
an adhesive sheet that holds basal surface of epithelial cells to underlying cells
basal lamina
Cells are flattened laterally, and cytoplasm is sparse
Simple squamous epithelium
lining of lymphatic vessels, blood vessels, and heart
Endothelium
serous membranes in the ventral body cavity
Mesothelium
Single layer of cells
Simple cuboidal epithelium
