chapter 4 - the microscope Flashcards
What is the function of the body tube?
It connects the ocular lens to the objective lens.
What is the function of the revolving turret / nosepiece.
It rotates to help the user choose between the low, medium of high power objective lens to view the specimen under various magnification.
What is the function of the objective lenses?
It magnifies tiny objects or examine minute specimens that are otherwise invisible to the naked eye and forms magnified images of objects.
What is the magnification of the low, medium and high objective power lenses?
Low - X4
Medium — X10
High - X40
What is the function of the iris diaphragm?
It enables the user to regulate and adjust the amount of light focus under the specimen.
What is the function of the illuminator?
It contains a bulb that provides light for the user to see what’s on the slide.
Some scopes have mirrors with a flat sides and a concave side which reflects light through the specimen.
What is the function of the eyepiece (ocular) lens?
It further magnifies the image projected.
What is the function of the arm?
It supports the body tube and connects it to the base.
What is the function of the stage clips?
It holds the specimen slide firmly on the stage.
What is the function of the mechanical stage with a hole?
It supports the slide and the hole allows light to shine through the specimen.
What is the function of the course adjustment knob?
It moves the tube and lenses up and down quickly to put the specimen nearly/approximately into focus.
What is the function of the fine adjustment knob?
It moves the tube and lenses up and down slowly to put the specimen exactly/perfectly in focus.
What is the function of the foot/base?
It keeps the microscope steady and acts as a stand+support for the entire scope.
