Bill of Rights
the first 10 amendments to the U.S. Constitution
separation of church and state
there should be a division between the government and religion
self-incrimination
having to testify against oneself. Citizens are protected from this in the 5th amendment

our government must act within the law. If a person is going to be punished for a crime, officials must follow the laws.
eminent domain
the power of the government to take private property for public use.
bail
money or property that the accused gives the court to hold in order to get released from jail
civil rights
rights guaranteed to all U.S. citizens
suffrage
the right to vote
poll tax
a tax a person had to pay to register to vote
draft
a policy requiring men to serve in the military
rationed
limited by law to a certain amount per household
jury duty
serving on a jury
