Evolution of policing in Canada
First police constable appeared in Quebec City in mid 1600s. The now RCMP was founded in 1873 to maintain law and order.
There are about 70,000 police officers in Canada now
Contract policing
Arrangement whereby the RCMP and provincial or territorial police forces provide provincial and municipal policing services
Provincial police
There are three provincial police forces in Ontario,Quebec, and Newfoundland.
Responsible for policing rural areas
Municipal police
Have jurisdiction within a city’s boundaries often contracted with the ramp.
First Nation police
They generally have full power to enforce on reserve lands, the criminal code, federal and provincial statutes, and band bylaws.

Activities of any individual or organization acting legally on behalf of public or private organizations or persons to maintain security and social order
