Chapter 4/ Social Perception - Psychology Flashcards
social perception
how we form impressions about other people/ understanding other people
darwin universality hypothesis
- all humans encode and decode facial expression the same
what affects accurate identification of facial expressions?
-affect blends, concealed emotions, display rules
We process information that is?
- consistent with our schemas
- directly affects us
- relevant to our self-schema
- unusual or unconforming behaviours
attribution theory
the cause of someones behaviour
covariation model of attribution
we attribute behaviour to factors that are present when the behaviour occurs
internal attribution
caused by person
external attribution
caused by environment
Types of information
- consensus
- unusual/distinctiveness
- consistency
- are other behaving the same way?
- do they treat others the same way?
- do they behave this way over time?
Covariation Model
-When explaining other people’s behaviors, we look for similarities (covariation) across a range of situations to help us narrow down specific attributions
two step model of attribution
step 1. we make automatic internal dispositional attributions for behaviour
step 2. given cognitive ability, we consider situational factors
Biases in Attribution Process
- overemphasize internal cause of behaviour
- perceptual salience (exaggerating info = makes us fearful)
- cultural influences
Actor - observer difference
-explain our behaviour more in terms of situation
