Explain the difference between old and new public health

A

Old public health focused on controlling infectious diseases and improving sanitation. Emerged during the 19th and 20th centuries.
- It focuses primarily on disease prevention and control, with interventions such as sanitation improvements, vaccination programs and quarantine measures.
- It aims to reduce morbidity and mortality rates within populations.

Whereas new public health takes a broader approach, regarding more social aspects like SES and education.
- It emerged after the 20th century and continues to evolve in response to changing health challenges and societal needs.
- It recognises the perspective of social, economic, environmental and behavioural factors that influence health.

Explain the relationship between the biomedical model and social model of health

A

Biomedical model focuses on the biological and physiological aspects of disease and health. It suggests that health is primarily determined by biological factors such as genetics.
- Treats specific diseases using medical interventions such as medications surgery, and other medical procedures

Social model of health takes a broader perspective where it acknowledges that health and illness are influenced by factors such as socioeconomic status, education, employment, housing, access to healthcare, and social support networks.

Medicare is a government funded organisation that is made to increase accessibility of health care to Australians by reducing costs and waiting times.

It aims to improve the access to healthcare for all Australians and to provide access to adequate healthcare at little or no cost to all Australians in need of treatment, regardless of age or income

Three main objectives:
- to make healthcare more affordable for all Australians
- to give all Australians access to healthcare services with priority according to clinic need
- to provide a high qualuty of care

Is designed to help Australians save money on medications reducing costs of said mediations with respect to the severity of the illness.

Provides subsidised prescription medication to Australian residents, as well as foregin visitors covered by a Reciprocal Health Care Agreement

Aims to subsidise the cost of a wide range of prescription medications, providing Australians with vital medications at affordable prices to ensure that optimal health outcomes and economic objectives are acheived.

Provides support and services to people with disabilities in Australia, giving them greater choice and control over their care and assistance.

Dedicated to the vision of a community that values people with disabilities by ensuring the people with a disability and their carer receive full access to the support they need

Helps people with disability to access mainstream services (healthcare, aged care), community services (sporting clubs, charaities), maintain informal support arrangements (unpaid help), and receive reasonable and necessary funded support (improve an individual’s quality of life).

Private health insurance promotes sustainability by easing pressure on public healthcare system, encouraging preventive care, and fostering a healthier population

It is economically sustainable because it helps to meet the healthcare needs of the current general through placing less burden on the public system

It aims to meet the needs of future generations by implementing incentive schemes to make access to private health insurance more affordable –> decreasing the demand on the public system.
