The release of a person on the presentation of a surety while awaiting a trial
Remand.
When a suspect is refused bail and is held in custody until the trial.
Summary Proceedings.
Proceedings held for summary offences in the magistrates court.
Lis the functions of the judge.
- Decide on points of law raised in the trial
- To instruct the jury on matters of law
- To sum up facts to jury at conclusion
- Ensure burden of proof is carried out
- To sentence accused
- To discharge a jury on completion of trial
- To hear and determine appeals

What is a magistrate?
Much the same as a judge but without the responsibility of minding a jury.
What is a barrister?
A lawyer who represents a client in court, takes instructions from solicitors.
What is a solicitor?
A lawyer who gives advice to clients and prepares briefs for barristers.
What is a Judge’s associate?
Someone who completes administrative, procedural and research tasks for the judge.
What is a Prothonary?
The chief administrative officer of the Supreme Court.
What is a Registrar?
Chiefs administrative officer of the magistrates’ and county Court.
What is a clerk?
A person who assists the magistrate with administrative support.
What is a tipstaff?
A person who ensures protocol and procedure is followed in the county and supreme courts and also looks after the jury.
