Chapter 4 - Proteins and Amino Acids Flashcards
1
Q
6 Different Types of Proteins
A
- Enzymes
- Storage & Transport - carry something, may be inserted in membrane
- Structural - Support&shape of cells & structure, ex. Keratin (hair and nails)
- Contractile - mechanical movement
- Regulation - factors of all kinds; hormones, receptors and more. May be on surface of cell. May have to network?
- Defense & protection - may have to network?
2
Q
Proteins (general)
A
act independently or as large aggregates or complexes
all polymers of linked amino acids
polypeptides, peptides
3
Q
Four levels of protein structure
A
Primary - actual sequence of amino acids - determined by DNA
Secondary - primary determines folding
Tertiary - secondary determines 3D shape for function
Quaternary - (some) have 4 peptides chained together to give function
4
Q
Zwitterions
A
have dipole, but overall charge is neutral
5
Q
Proteins assembled from?
A
L-amino acids
6
Q
Fisher Projection
A
Horizontal - up
Vertical - down
7
Q
Identifying L-amino acid
A
travel ONward from carbonyl C toward N of amino group, R-group is on left
