Chapter 4- Population Biology Flashcards
Density-dependent factor
Factors that have an increasing affect as the population increases
Carrying capacity
The maximum population of a particular species which an ecosystem can support sustainably
Density-independent factors
Factors that affect all populations regardless of their density
Exponential growth
As the population gets larger, it grows at a fast rate
Life-history pattern
An organisms reproductive pattern
Age structure
The proportions in a population at different age levels
Birth rate
Number of births per 1000 people in a given year
Death rate
Number of deaths per 1000 people in a given year
Demography
The study of human population size, density and distribution, movement, and its birth and death rates
Doubling time
The time it takes for a population to double in size
