Chapter 4- Muscular Strenght and Endurance Flashcards
Muscular Strength
Amount of force a muscle can provide with a single maximum effort
1 rep MAX
Muscular endurance
ability to hold or repeat a muscular contraction for a long time
Counting of max # of Repetitions
Characteristics of Muscle
consists of muscle cells called muscle fibers–> create fasciculi which divide into myofibrils and myofilamants
sacromere
basic contractile unit that makes up myofilaments
epimysium
outermost layer surrounding entire muscle
perimysium
middle layer surrounding a bundle of fascicles
Endomysium
innermost layer surrounding individual muscle fibers
chain of muscle
muscle, fasciluli, mm fiber, myofibrils, myofilament (actin and myosin)
Hypertrophy
more working out the bigger your muscles will be, increase in the size of the muscle fiber
atrophy
decrease in the size of the muscle fiber due to inactivity
Slow- Twitch
Fatigue resistant
aerobic energy system
reddish in color
contract slower
Fast- Twitch
Fatigues quickly Contracts rapidly Anaerobic whitish in color Explosive exercise
Motor Units
- made up of a nerve connected to a number of muscles fibers
- strength training improves body’s ability to recruit motor units (muscle learning)
Benefits of Muscular Strength and Endurance
Improved:
- Preformance
- Body Composistion
- Muscle and bone health with aging
Injury and death prevention
Metabolic and cardiovascular health
Enhanced self-image
Quality of life
Isometric
Static
-muscle contraction without any movement
