Q

Metallic bonding

A

Metallic bonding is the electrostatic forces of attraction between the cations and electrons that are free to move within the regular lattice metal structure

Q

Why do metals conduct electricity and heat

A

The sea of delocalised electrons with the regular lattice, which are free to move which allows the current to pass through the metal

Q

Why are metals lustrous

A

Light rays reflect off the sea of delocalised electrons.

The close packing of the cations prevent light from passing through making the metal opaque

Q

Why are metals malleable and ductile

A

The bonding in metals is not rigid.
When a metal is struck by a hammer the atoms slide through the electron sea to new positions while continuing to maintain their connections to each other.

Q

Why do metals have high melting and boiling points

A

Metals have the highest boiling and melting points because they have the strongest chemical bonds which are metallic. The strongest chemical bonds require the most energy to break apart. Heat is measured in units of energy, so that’s why the boiling point for metals require lots of heat.
