Chapter 4: Lipids Continued Flashcards
Saturated Fats should be how much of your 2000 calorie diet?
Less than 7%
What percent of fats should be in your 2000 calorie diet?
25-30%
-Fish, Nuts, and vegetable oils
Where should the majority of your fats come from?
Monounsaturated and Polyunsaturated Fats
Fat digestion begins in:
The oral cavity with the aid of lingual lipase secreted from the salivary glands and the gastric lipase when it enters the stomach
Where does your food go after leaving the oral cavity?
The stomach
Because fat stays in the stomach longer, what does it do?
It gives you a sense of fullness for a longer period of time
How is digestion continued after the food leaves the stomach?
It continues into the small intestines
Where is Bile that is produced by the liver stored?
In the gallbladder until need for digesting fat
The bile enters the small intestines through:
The bile duct
What does the bile do?
It reduces the fat molecules further into lesser particles, making it easier for lipase to break down fat molecules into fatty acids and glycerol
What happens once Fatty Acids make their way to the liver?
They are reduced to chylomicrons and are deposited into the lymph system, which carries them through the blood
Fatty Acids that are NOT used:
Are stored in the adipose tissue
What does the Unabsorbed Cholesterol do?
It binds to soluble fiber and leaves the body
Eating fiber:
Reduces cholesterol
Environmental concerns:
- Plants and animals absorb fat-soluble chemicals such as pesticides which are stored in fat and oil
- People who use these plants and animals as food will absorb some of the stored chemicals
- DDT
