GI
is a geographical indicator

are used to indicate where the grapes used to make the wine are grown ( can be whatever grapes )
GI inside the EU
GI comes with regulation of which grapes can be grown
2 types of GIs within the EU
Protected Designation of Origin ( PDO )
Protected Geographical Indication ( PGI )
PDO - characteristics
small area with tight regulations
PGI - characteristics
covers a wider area and has less strict regulations that a PDO
Vine age
Older Vines produce smaller numbers of grapes - lower yield -> more expensive but also higher quality
Old Vine or Vielles Vignes
Vintage
The year in which the grape was harvested
A southern hemisphere 2016 is
6 month older than a northern hemisphere 2016
Appellation
Geographical indicator - PDO
Icewine / Eiswein
Grapes that were left to freeze or until the first frost / ice formed on the grapes over night
Icewine characteristics
high levels of sugar and acid
