Please list three objectives and possible procedures for the category of LISTENING and DESCRIBING music.

A

During the intermediate grades (4-6) the students will:

1) Objective: Move body or limbs to demonstrate understanding of rhythm and tempo.
Procedures: Use conducting gestures to indicate tempos and rhythm; counts beats verbally while subdividing rhythms by clapping.

2) Objectives: Notate simple pitch and duration patterns from dictation.
Procedures: Begin with familiar examples of simple melodies; relate to tonal center; use duration patterns of quarters and eighths.

3) Objectives: Begin developing a repertoire of recognized masterworks and their composers, including orchestral, choral, and operating works, and Broadway musicals.
Procedures: Recognize musical examples of one or two composers from Baroque and later period by listening.

4) Objective: Discuss music in own words, and, when possible, using musical vocabulary.
Procedures: Choose new piece to listen to, and discuss the main features of the music with classmates; make written and /or recorded journal entries to keep in portfolio.

During the intermediate grades (4-6) the student will:

1) Objectives: Display understanding of role of music in affecting mood and behavior in commercials, shopping centers, and other places.
Procedures: Observe videos of television commercials, cue sound track only, then discuss use of music to enhance or to create moods.

2) Objectives: Display positive attitude in responses to music.
Procedures: Participate freely in music classes through playing, singing, discussing, and listening.

3) Objectives: Select a variety of types of music for personal listening pleasure.
Procedures: Select from classroom collections that include a variety of popular and “classical” music when using listening stations.

4) Objectives: Discuss music preferences based on musical reason.
Procedures: Be able to answer questions such as: Why do I like this piece of music?

5) Objectives: Develop and appreciation for variety of cultural or ethnic musical styles.
Procedures: Select and listen to a variety of local and national ethnic music; share with class through demonstration and discussion.
