Chapter 4: Floor Systems Flashcards
Difference between pre and post stressed concrete?
Prestressed is carried out in precasting plant, while poststressed is in-situ
Types of concrete slabs:
- one way slab
- one way joist slab
- two way slab and beam (no joists)
- two way waffle slab
- two way flat plate (no beams/girders or joists)
- two way flat slab (with column capitals)
Lift-slab Construction
A technique of constructing multistory buildings in which all horizontal slabs are cast at ground level, when cured, are raised into position by hydrolic jacks.
SHORING
Temporary supports holding beam and slab forms until the placed concrete can cure and support itself.
SITECAST CONCRETE
Concrete poured on site.
MASONRY
The building of structures from individual units laid in and bound together by mortar.
MORTAR
A workable paste used to bind construction blocks together and fill the gaps between them. Mortar becomes hard when it sets, resulting in a rigid aggregate structure. Modern mortars are tipically made from a mixture of sand, a binder such as cement or lime and water.
Precast Concrete Units
- solid flat slabs
- hollow core slabs
- single tees
- double tees
- rectangular/L-shape/inverted tee beams
- AASHTO girders

Structural steel framing systems
- one way beam system
- two way beam system
- triple beam system

Types of metal decking
- form decking
- composite decking
- cellular decking
SHIM
Strip of metal, wood or other material used to set base plates or structural members at the proper level for placement of grout, or to maintain the elongation in some types of posttensioning anchorages.
GROUT
A hydrous (containing water) mortar whose consistency allows it to be placed or pumped into small joints or cavities, as between pieces of ceramic clay, slate and floor tile.
